7/14/2023 0 Comments Boyfriend dungeon review![]() Even if you don’t care about the dating sim part of the game, the dungeon crawling itself is already more than satisfying. Boyfriend Dungeon is available on Game Pass as well, so if you’re even a touch skeptical about this game’s odd themes, I highly suggest diving into it and seeing it for yourself. There could have been a bit more variety in terms of enemies and areas, with me being hopeful that a potential sequel might fix these issues. Sure, every character you meet may want to hop into bed with you in an absurdly thirsty way. Which you better be able to do if you plan to survive for very long.īoyfriend Dungeon was far more enjoyable than expected. Each dungeon only seems to have one song that loops pretty consistently, if you’re able to survive for more than a floor at a time, that is. The soundtrack is fitting to the game, especially the synth/electronic tunes in the nightclub dungeon. It’s a game I unequivocally enjoyed for its heartfelt love stories, absolutely bonkers premise of dating people who could change into a wieldable weapon, and that I could use my sword beau to fight my demons in the aforementioned Boyfriend Dungeon. The other side of the artistic presence is the music. Kenneth Shepard, AUGI’m left with complicated feelings about Boyfriend Dungeon. These are animated incredibly nicely and are actually one of my favourite parts of this game. ![]() The real key part here are the small animated cutscenes when a character changes from a weapon to a person the first time you meet them. The visuals while dungeon crawling is a bit more simplistic, but everything is distinguishable. The art outside of combat is nice: all the characters are well designed and their different sprites accurately capture their attitudes and personalities. This could probably do with some context, but I’m not giving it. This should have an effect on who you can have a relationship with, and who you can just be friends with. When building your character, you’re able to pick he/him, her/she, or they/them. I preferred what happened in games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age, where everyone had a personality and their own sexuality. What are the chances that you will not only get along with the vastly different group of people you come across, but all of them will be attracted to you? This is where some of the traction of the game starts to let up a bit. It seems every single person that you come across is happy to date anyone and everyone. Weirdly enough, this is where the main complaint about Boyfriend Dungeon comes in. One may, or may not be a cat, but let’s just ignore that part. So less than a week after arriving in California, you’ll go from having never been on a date to juggling quite a few partners at once. Going on dates with all of the weapons is important, as this is how you get more abilities for them. Players in Boyfriend Dungeon can also go on dates with NPCs in different locations. There is more of an RPG element in Boyfriend Dungeon than in Hades, allowing players more choice in how a relationship progresses. To date, or to dungeon crawl? That is the question. There is also much more time spent in dialogue conversations than in the dungeon, with players able to openly flirt with characters or outright shut down a relationship they don't want to pursue. There is a much wider range of gifts a player can craft or purchase for NPCs, and those NPCs have likes and dislikes that can make them respond positively or negatively towards a gift. Boyfriend Dungeon, on the other hand, is a much more dynamic in its relationship building. Players give a gift, and the relationship proceeds. While this allows the player to romance certain Hades NPCs over time, that relationship track is just that, a straightforward track. Hades allows players to progress relationships with NPCs by giving them gifts of Nectar or Ambrosia. Players primarily get better through their character gaining XP and leveling up to do more damage.īoyfriend Dungeon instead places most of its focus on the relationship aspect of the game. While Boyfriend Dungeon has different weapons and spells to unlock and level, it is a much more limited selection. Boyfriend Dungeon, on the other hand, is much more simple. That's on top of utilizing keepsake items that give other bonuses, as well as leveling-up buffs from the Mirror of Night. Besides unlocking different weapons, Zagreus can collect boons from the gods over the course of a run which give him different abilities, some of which can build to interesting combos. For instance, Hades has much more in-depth combat mechanics. ![]() ![]() But each game places a different emphasis on mechanics. Both games involve unlocking weapons and abilities and building relationships with NPCs. Both involve roguelite dungeon crawling, with players progressing as far as they can in a dungeon before they die.
